Two men in an editing suite

In Conversation with... Stephen Hoo

This event took place at Channel 4 HQ on 10th March 2011. Stephen was interviewed by Lucille Howe

Hoo born and raised in London studied Theatre at The Brit Performing Arts School. He then went on to study Modern and Classical Chinese at The School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), where he also studied Film & Theatre of China, Taiwan and the Diaspora.

Stephen is proud of his Chinese heritage and actively seeks work where these themes are present. He has played the infamous Song Liling in David Henry Hwangs subversive “M.Butterfly”, the rough mainlander Ming opposite David Tse in Simon Wu's “Wolf in the House”, adopted Terry in Rikki Beadle-blair's “HOME”, the drunken foul mouthed Charlie in “BODEGA LUNG FAT” at The Hackney Empire and British born Chinese Chris in Soho Theatre's “Soho Streets”.

Stephen is a long time collaborator with Director Rikki Beadle-Blair and features in two new films as gay teen footballer in “KICK OFF” and Homophobic bully in “FIT”.

A showing of the film ' FIT' in which he stars was followed by a talk with Stephen.

Karmel likes make-up and trendy clothes, yet she also likes girls. Does she need to ‘fit’ the lesbian stereotype?

Ryan (Stephen Hoo) is one of the lads. Computer games, beer and bullying are the name of his game, yet a secret crush on fellow pupil Tegs threatens to blow his cover.

Isaac, meanwhile, uses muscles and a hot head to threaten his schoolmates with violence should they display a gay attitude in his vicinity.

It is down to loud and proud drama teacher Loris and his pink leotard to show these kids that they share a lot more in common than they first thought.

FIT is the feature film adaptation of the highly successful play for schools aimed at tackling homophobic bullying, seen by more than 20,000 students around the UK.
