Writing about the 4Talented
Hello, I’m Suchandrika, and I’m a freelance journalist from London. I got into writing for 4Talent’s websites and magazine last year after pitching an article on a scheme for female horror directors to Catherine Bray of the Central England network. Other than that, I’ve worked for websites, newspapers and news agencies.
What really leapt out at me from interviewing people for 4Talent and other places was the many different ways in which people found their way into media and film. From picking up a camera at 11 years old to applying to every scheme going to taking knitting with your mum to a professional level, there are as many ways of getting into what you want to do as there are people. In fact, there’s almost too much choice. For me, it was a combination of (lots of) work experience and keeping in touch with people who might want to commission me. If something catches your eye, it’s always worth having a go at it, rather than just thinking, “Oh, I don’t have a chance.” If it doesn’t work out, there will always be another project to get started on.
So, it’s always helpful to read about someone else who has the job you’d love to do, which is why 4Talent’s editorial side was always such a great resource. Of course, these credit-crunchy times have taken their toll on everyone in the media, but initiatives like Generation Next and Inspiration Week should carry the torch for people trying to find their way in. Fingers crossed - give me something to write about!
